A background in scientific research fueled an interest in patents, copyrights and intellectual property legal issues, leading Carling D. Miller to Hahn Loeser & Parks. Ms. Miller joins the Chicago office of Hahn Loeser as an associate attorney where she will concentrate on intellectual property legal issues, including trademarks, copyrights and patents.

“Carling is a great addition to our team because she brings practical, hands-on experience helping individuals with their trademarks and patents. That is rare experience for many younger IP attorneys,” explained Steven E. Feldman, Chicago Partner-in-Charge and Chair of the Firm’s Intellectual Property Group. “She expands the breadth and depth of our prosecution teams and will also be a fully engaged member on our future IP litigation matters.”

During her undergraduate years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and Genomics, Ms. Miller worked in a laboratory specializing in research on Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a rare genetic condition. That experience generated questions about patents and trademarks associated with research studies, leading to Ms. Miller’s pursuit of a law degree from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, graduating magna cum laude.

While in law school, Ms. Miller served as the Candidacy Editor for the UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law and was published in the same journal. As an intern for Lawyers for the Creative Arts, Ms. Miller worked directly with individuals in the arts to analyze their IP and entertainment issues. Ms. Miller acted as a student attorney in the UIC Trademark Clinic, where she worked under the supervision of a trademark attorney to assist clients in all aspects of the trademark cycle, from trademark searching and filing applications to responding to USPTO Office Actions.

Prior to earning her law degree, Ms. Miller worked as a law clerk, performing trademark searches and contributing to search opinions and Office Action Responses. She also assisted with patent drafting, performed patent prior art searches, and assisted in writing various motions and briefs in Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) disputes.
